An antique French vineyard scythe dating from the 1940s. Also called billhook or pruning knife, it was commonly used in France by winegrowers with an important variety of traditional local patterns. This particular one is from the Drôme department in the South of France. It features on one side a curved blade for pruning thick, woody plants and a flat blade on the other side for cutting woody material such as shrubs and small branches. The blade has been stamped with the knife maker's mark (Bret) and the model number. It has a long turned wood handle.
14" Long x 7" Wide
(35 cm x 18 cm).
The vineyard billhook knife is in very good antique condition with signs of age and wear. There are two thin cracks to the wooden handle and surface marks, patina and light oxidation to the metal blade.
